Product Overview

Custom automotive connector interface seals are designed to create a controlled sealing boundary at the mating face of an automotive electrical connector.

For this integrated structure, liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is molded directly onto the specified sealing area of the engineering plastic connector housing. The silicone forms the functional face-sealing region while connector cavities, terminal openings, locking features and other required plastic areas remain exposed.

This page focuses on an integrated LSR overmolded interface seal rather than a separately assembled loose silicone gasket. Each part is manufactured according to the customer's connector geometry, mating structure, sealing requirements and production specifications.

Why Use an Integrated LSR Interface Seal

An automotive connector interface seal must maintain controlled contact between the connector housing and its mating component after assembly.

Compared with installing a separate loose gasket, integrated LSR overmolding can help maintain the seal in a defined position, reduce secondary assembly steps and improve repeatability during production.

However, the final sealing result depends on the complete interface design. Seal geometry, compression, plastic tolerance, mating-surface position, bonding or mechanical retention, mold shut-off and assembly conditions should be reviewed together.

For broader automotive connector sealing applications, review our custom automotive connector silicone seal solutions and plastic with silicone overmolding capability.

Material and Structure

The rigid connector frame is produced from an engineering plastic selected according to the mechanical, thermal and electrical requirements of the final assembly. Liquid silicone rubber is molded onto the designated mating-face area to create the integrated interface seal.

Typical structural requirements may include:

Controlled face-sealing surface
Continuous compression path
Defined silicone-to-plastic boundary
Open terminal and connector passages
Exposed locking and positioning features
Mold shut-off around functional plastic areas
Customized sealing-lip geometry
Bonding or mechanical retention where required
IP67 / IP68 sealing targets subject to final assembly validation

The silicone should only occupy the areas required for sealing. Terminal openings, electrical mating cavities and other specified functional regions must remain free of silicone unless the customer design specifically requires otherwise.

Sealing Compression & DFM

Reliable interface sealing requires controlled compression when the two connector components reach their final mating position.

Insufficient compression may leave local leakage paths, while excessive compression can increase mating force, deform the silicone sealing lip or create unstable long-term sealing behavior.

During DFM review, key factors may include:

Sealing direction
Seal height and width
Silicone hardness
Compression range
Mating-surface geometry
Connector tolerance stack-up
Plastic housing support
LSR-to-plastic retention
Mold parting-line position
Gate and venting location
Shut-off design
Flash control
Final waterproof or leak-test conditions

A mold parting line or excess flash located directly on a critical sealing contact surface can interfere with uniform compression. For additional engineering guidance, review our LSR seal parting-line design guide.

Typical Applications and Customization

Custom LSR overmolded interface seals can be developed for automotive connector assemblies used in:

EV electrical systems
Automotive sensors
Battery management systems
ECU and electronic control modules
Camera and ADAS modules
Automotive lighting systems
Wire harness interfaces
Charging and power-distribution systems
Waterproof automotive electronic connectors

Customization can include connector geometry, number and shape of functional openings, sealing-lip profile, silicone hardness, plastic substrate, silicone color, compression structure, bonding method, mechanical retention and validation requirements.

This is a custom manufacturing service. The final geometry is developed according to the customer's drawing, plastic insert, physical sample or complete mating assembly rather than supplied as a standard stock connector.

Start Your Automotive Connector Interface Seal Project

SiliconePlus provides custom LSR overmolding for automotive connector interface sealing projects based on your drawing, sample and mating-assembly requirements.

To evaluate your project and prepare a quotation, please provide your 2D/3D drawing or physical sample, plastic substrate information, silicone coverage area, target sealing requirement, estimated quantity, and relevant assembly or testing conditions.

Our engineering team can review the interface sealing boundary, compression area, LSR-to-plastic structure, mold feasibility and manufacturing process before tooling and sampling.

We provide custom manufacturing only. Standard stock connector assemblies are not supplied.
